Zardari – a threat to democracy?

Author: Farman Nawaz

Confusing the concept of democracy with good governance is the logic Pakistani opposition is using for agitation against the sitting government. Whenever opposition wants to protest it starts declaiming ‘Zardari is threat to democracy'. Media also did not bother to explain that democracy is not a guarantee to good governance.
InPakistanthe way democracy is in its preliminary stages similarly common people's knowledge about some political terminologies is also in initial stages and they can not differentiate between democracy and government. Opposition takes advantage of the ignorance of the people and bad governance is labeled as an attack on the democratic process. Democracy is the mechanism through which people select their rulers while governance means to minimize the political, social and economical shortcomings of a state by the proper utilization of government machinery, civil society, media and market. If the mandatory objectives are achieved successfully, it is called good governance. A government can perform badly in economic field but it does not prove that the government is against democracy. This explanation can be applied on the recent recession in theUSA. The recession is a kind of Obama's administration failure but no one said ‘Obama is threat to democracy or system'.
By studding the recent history of Zardari we can easily come to the conclusion that he tried his best to strengthen the feeble democracy inPakistan. ‘Pakistan Kapay' was the start of his new political career inPakistan. NFC award is another step in this direction. Balochistan package – though not met the desired destination – was a move to appease the annoyed Baloch. Struggle to rename NWFP was also his motive to diminish the political meagerness of Pakhtoons. Strengthening the parliament by disowning the power of president to dissolve the assemblies is a clear example of giving more powers to democratic government. Standing like a rock in front of US pressures to guard the pro-democratic establishment shows his commitment to reconciliation with establishment which will certainly strengthen democracy in future.
Some critics of the government opine that bad governance will create space for undemocratic forces to come in power for this reason Zardari's government poor performance is criticized. This idea is no more than nonsense. Actually agitation against feeble democracy is providing a way to undemocratic forces to creep in to derail the democratic process. Bad governance must be criticized within the parliament and constitutional ways are there to kick out the sitting government. If no confidence move is not possible for the opposition and Zaradri is clever enough to keep allies happy then opposition must accept it as an aspect of democracy. The way Zardari is struggling to keep the alliance intact similarly opposition must also try to workout a plan to come in power through constitutional ways. Otherwise the option of forming a public opinion against the government is always available to opposition.
There is a perception that allies are not with Zardari but rather they are having lust for the government. But can opposition change this attitude of allies? The same attitude will be there even after elections. Now will opposition take advantage of this behavior of political parties or they have any planning to educate people and political forces to shun this approach. Zardari had now the experience of handling diverse interests of allies and this gives him an upper hand over opposition. Opposition will have to learn this technique of bargaining, reconciliation and running a coalition government.
Zardari is derided of hiding in ‘presidential bunker'. After murder of Benazir Bhutto and Salman Taseer and a suicide attack on Asfandyar Wali by extremists – the same terrorists which are also labeled by General Hamid Gul as perverted and playing in the hands of foreign masters - if someone is expecting that Zardari should repeat the mistake of Bibi and must come out in public, they are not well wishers of Pakistan. Zardari is brave enough to live and hide insidePakistanbut some leaders made agreements just to save their lives and the degree of their bravery can be measured from the point that even now they are not filing a case against the dictator for his action of 12 October. Leaders who sacrificed the two third majority of the parliament just for their own luxury are the real threats to democracy.
Zardari will be a threat to democracy if he plans to rig the elections of 2013. He will be a threat to democracy if he feels insecure and handover the reigns of government to establishment. He will be a threat to democracy if he starts usurping the rights of smaller provinces. He will be a threat to democracy if he starts taking funds from terrorists and foreign masters just to win the elections. Bad governance is not a threat to democracy but it will pave way for other political leaders to step in and rule the country.

Cricket - Yousuf Ask Zardari To Help Icl Players

Author: Peri Witny

According to Yousuf, he had asked Mr. Zardari to look himself in to the matter of ICL Players as the PCB is not handling the issue according to its nature. ICL players issue is getting more sensitive day by day. Players who have joined the Indian cricket League have been banned from playing their national team. This ban has put bad impact on the performances of the cricket teams as many of good players have moved to ICL.

You can see this difference easily from the scores and stats of the teams by having a comparison with old and new matches. In early days near about every country have put ban on the players who have joined the ICL. But after the Sri Lanka’s full ban removal, Pakistan has also partially removed the ban from ICL players. PCB has allowed the ICL players to play the domestic season after a judgment that was passed by Sindh High Court. But the thing that players want is the complete removal of ban from them so that they can freely play for leagues and for their national team as well.

Yousuf have approached to pattern in chief of board just because he didn’t have anymore trust on PCB. And due to similar reason he along with other ICL players had entered a petition in the Court as well. Mr. Zardari has promised Yousuf and other players that he will look in to the matter by himself and take the decision that will be good for the Pakistan, for the team and for the players as well.

Muhammad Yousuf has taken a stance that he has been kicked out of twenty20 team just due to the internal politics of the management. He said that along with some other ICL players his stats are still best then many players that are in National team. You can even check the stats and cricket results of his innings through last matches from internet. He said that everything is clear and in front of everyone. There should be no question about it.

BCCI is just trying to kick off ICL just because of their echo. They have introduced IPL just to make sure that ICL go in to the dark nights and people would love to watch the games of IPL. But this kind of BCCI’s approach is getting wrong day by day as ICL is getting fame in general public day by day. People loved to watch their matches due to the inclusion of two teams in two seasons, one is Lahore Bad shah’s that concluded of just Pakistani players, was included in the first season of ICL and other one is Dhaka warriors that conclude of only Bangladeshi players and was included in ICL in second season. They have also maintained their website on which you can easily get regular updates about ICL and about other cricket news as well. You can easily get live cricket scores updates and other thing as well.

There are websites like ScoresPro.com from which you can easily get cricket livescore and other news about sports as well.

Shoes hurled at Zardari in Britain by taha

Shoes Zardari flew to Britain London: A man threw his shoes, both in Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, when directed at a public meeting in Birmingham. Shoes landed just short of it. The Telegraph reported Sunday that Zardari, who has criticized the visit of Britain, while there were floods in his country was in the middle of his speech when an elderly man in the crowd hurled shoes at him. Unidentified man then removed from the meeting Saturday night by police and security officials. "Zardari was in the middle of a long campaign speech when a man in the back of the crowd hurled shoes at him," an eyewitness was quoted as saying. He reached this target and it was not clear what the man was complaining about. " While speaking to the British daily, Zardari has rejected allegations that should have stayed at home. He said that the visit resulted in the flooding receiving more international attention than they might otherwise have done. http://articles.dj-fun.com/ Zardari said: "These meetings have been scheduled months ago, and I come abroad, attracted more attention to them than myself would be able to draw." In February last year, a German student hurled a shoe during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his visit to Cambridge University in Britain. Martin Jahnke, 27-year-old graduate student in the department of pathology university, was arrested on February 2, 2009 for throwing a shoe at Wen, who gave a speech on the global economy to an audience of mostly Chinese students during an official visit in Britain. Wen shoe lost by about a meter. Jahnke is emulating an Iraqi television journalist, Muntazer al-Zaidi, who threw his shoes in the former U.S. president George Bush during a visit to Baghdad in December 2008

Imf Zardari and Pakistan

Author: Rana Asif

The IMF loan will stave off what some feared was an imminent economic collapse in a country at the frontline of the war against the Taliban and al Qaeda. But it falls well short of the $10 billion to $15 billion Pakistani officials have said they need over the next two years.

"We have to focus on finding more money," said a senior finance ministry official. "We plan to go back to our friends, America, to London, to Berlin and the rest of Europe, to China, to ask for help."

President Asif Ali Zardari had insisted that Pakistan wouldn't need IMF aid, but he found the country's major donors deeply reluctant to bail it out.

Even if those allies do come up with more money, having to turn to the IMF for help caps a humbling two months for President Asif Ali Zardari, who leads Pakistan's first democratically elected government in almost a decade and is the widower of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Upon taking office in September, Mr. Zardari insisted Pakistan wouldn't need IMF aid. But he found the country's major donors deeply reluctant to bail out Islamabad, in part because of doubts about his ability to manage the economy without international oversight.

Recently, Islamabad has increased interest rates and plans to slash electricity subsidies, moves that have been praised by the IMF. The government has also eliminated ruinous fuel subsidies that helped to bring about Pakistan's economic crisis by draining its foreign-exchange reserves, which currently would cover less than two months of imports.

Neither Pakistan nor the IMF has disclosed the conditions of the 23-month loan package. The opposition was quick to criticize the deal, saying the belt-tightening measures would only hurt the poor. "This IMF loan the government is getting is, in fact, poison, and the nation has been forced to drink it," Javed Hashmi, a senior figure in the opposition Pakistan Muslim League under Nawaz Sharif, told reporters.

Under the loan deal, the IMF has provided $3.1 billion to keep the country from defaulting on its international debts; the remaining money will be disbursed over the next two years. The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank are also expected to provide loans, and Pakistani officials said that very earlier China had agreed to provide a $500 million loan, as well.

Those loans "are not enough, but will give them a lifeline," said Brij Raj Singh, the chief executive of Dubai-based Baer Capital Partners.

Hopes for cash infusions from other allies, who are facing economic problems of their own, "may not be realistic," the finance ministry official said.

Instead, a senior planning ministry official said Pakistan is looking to the U.S., China and some European countries to help fund major infrastructure projects, such as dams and highways, which are being discussed as a part of the so-called Friends of Democratic Pakistan initiative.

The IMF also made it clear that Pakistan needs more money, saying Monday that "additional donor financial support will help consolidate the country's international reserve position and finance the expanded social safety net."

Even if Pakistan gets all of the money it needs, its economic future is deeply uncertain. Inflation is running at around 25%, its stock market is down about 35% since the start of the year, and the rupee has plunged against the dollar.

Democracy A Bad Experience For The Pakistanis

Author: Mohammad Mansoor Ali Ansari

Pakistani people are beginning to curse the word Democracy!!! The clash of the Rhinos is destroying the country very quickly.

The politicians which are in the picture now are showing the immaturity and profound mishandling of the greatest opportunity they were given to prove that they can steer Pakistan out of the drowning situation.

The restoration of Judiciary is an important issue. The lack of commitment and repeated change in statements by PPP has surely aggravated the situation. Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry’s restoration though looks very difficult decision for the Government but it will put a symbolic impact on the minds of people of Pakistan who were seeing the lame Judiciary since the era of Mr. Ayub Khan. Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif have shown extreme immaturity while dealing with Mr. Asif Ali Zardari. May be Sharif brothers have underestimated the hidden cunningness of the new President. No matter Mr. Zardari has literally made Sharifs real "Maamoo" or in more logical terms, fooled the experienced politicians, but it must be seen that the handling of other issues by Mr. Zardari is showing lack of maturity. Particularly when we discuss the handling of Mumbai attacks aftermaths and most importantly the shameful incident of attack on Sri Lankan Players, the control on the issues of security seems nowhere existed.

The internal rifts in PPP after the toppling of Punjab Government are slowly getting visible. The resignation of Mr. Raza Rabbani from Cabinet and from the position of House Leader in Senate is a strong alarm that PPP is slipping towards complete dominance of Punjabi elements. The rift would soon aggravate because the way loyals like Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Naheed Khan, Safder Abbasi and now Raza Rabbani are treated, it is strongly believed that PPP is completely hijacked by the loyals of Mr. Zardari who are mostly from Punjab Side.

One must also believe that what we see now as PPP is not the PPP of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. It is a party hijacked by Mr. Zardari who was no where in the picture during election campaign of Ms. Bhutto and was just raising kids in Dubai. All of a sudden things quickly changed and altogether new PPP came out with the ideology colliding with the aims of Mohatarama Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.

The reaching storm of Long March, the fire balled tones of Sharif Brothers, the cracking walls of PPP due to demoralizing the Sindhi elements and further more the grave law and order situation show the signs of another sad ending of the democratic process. It can happen any moment as the boiling point is almost reached.

It is extremely bad luck for Pakistan that the train of democracy stopped for such a long time on every station. The final destination of reaching a strong democratic Pakistan is a dream almost lost now. People like Mr. Yousuf Raza Gilani & Mohammad Khan Junejo (Late) can be called as the most decent Prime Ministers in the history of Pakistan after Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan (Late). But the Presidents in the era of both these Prime Ministers backstabbed them and gave a serious blow to the nation.

It is a most serious suggestion now to both the fighting parties to understand the grave situation of the country. People are committing suicide and are forced to sell their children to earn their livelihood. People of Pakistan should also understand that present leadership is having their future completely secured in the Swiss Banks and towered villas in the countries like Switzerland. Recently I read on a website that top Leaders of Pakistan are now planning to purchase small Islands in the Caribbean Sea. If it is true then it would be extreme bad luck of this nation that they have once again allowed such leaders to escape safely.

The link below shows the magnitude of wealth Mr. Asif Ali Zardari has collected. Thanks Mr. Musharraf and his NRO, all the looted money of the Pakistani people is now in the hands of our Golden President.

http://alaiwah.wordpress.com/2008/08/26/asif-zardaris-list-of-local-international-wealth/

It is strongly demanded by educated and sincere people that political parties like MQM, Tehreek-e-Insaf, Awami Muslim League etc. may be given opportunity to run the government for a transitional term of at least 3 years. It is true that currently the kind of approach which MQM has adopted for the progress in the city of Karachi, that may also change the face of the nation. Tehreek-e-Insaf has no particular track record of ruling the country or even a minor city, it is hopeful that the leadership of Mr Imran Khan can bring visible changes to the face of Pakistan. Sheikh Rasheed is also a true person and has his hands clean even after decades long career in politics.

The people of Pakistan should understand that the time is running out. They need to act with determination and they should decide now that either they want the current leadership of the country on their seats or their time is really over.

Time is very short now!!

How much money is enough?

Author: King Bruce

Scandal or no scandal how much money is enough? to satisfy the greed of Mr 10%, however no one knows unless Mr Zardari can share his mind with poor people of Pakistan. Instead of sucking the blood of poor every other five year these poor people of Pakistan might give him a one off payment to remove this curse of God for ever. No matter what ever you should do this evil genius will just come back again.

Most in Pakistan called him “Mr. Ten Percent”. Today they call him “Mr. 90%”. Most Pakistanis agree “chor choree say jayee, haira phairyee say na jayee”. The cancellation of he German Subs and the award to the French is one of the biggest scandals that will be executed when the French President Sarkozi arrives in Islamabad within the next few weeks. Mr. Zardari is the head of the government. According to the constitution he cannot hold the office of the presidency (chairmanship0 of the PPPP. That makes him a biased body. The president is supposed to be unbiased body representing the federation. Holding two offices in unconstitutional. Mr. Zardari has had charges proven against him and he got off scot free through a NRO that is now defunct (it was never ratified by the National Assembly).

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan averted a potentially destabilizing coalition split after the government abandoned efforts to push through a bill that would formalize an amnesty for President Asif Ali Zardari and some of his ministers from corruption charges.

The president’s problems aren’t over yet: If the bill isn’t passed, it could expose Mr. Zardari and the other ministers to a reopening of the corruption cases against them.

At issue is the so-called Nation Reconciliation Ordinance passed by former President Pervez Musharraf as part of a 2007 deal with Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister who was slain shortly after returning to Pakistan. The ordinance covered Mr. Zardari, who was the husband of Mrs. Bhutto and who faced a half-dozen graft charges and three murder charges. He denies them all, saying they were politically motivated. The Wall Street Journal.

The recent unearthing of a corruption scam involving the embattled Pakistani President Asif Zardari can eventually leave him with only two options – either to step down as a director of Park Lane Estates (Pvt) Limited or resign as the head of the state as keeping both the positions simultaneously is a violation of the country’s unanimously adopted 1973 Constitution.

President Zardari and his elder son Bilawal Bhjutto, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, have recently purchased 2,460 Kanals (307 acres) of prime land in Islamabad, worth over Rs 2 billion, for a mere throw away price of Rs 62 million. The land was purchased in March 2009 by a private company — Park Lane Estates (Pvt) Ltd, owned by Zardari and Bilawal. The Park Lane land is worth Rs 2 billion.

The unearthing of the scam has generated a heated debate across Pakistan, with the legal and constitutional experts maintaining that the president has violated the 1973 Constitution by keeping the position of director of a private company and the only way to rectify this violation was his removal from the coveted slot. Pakistan’s former law minister and renowned lawyer S M Zafar said that if the president was holding the office of director of a company then the second half of Article 43(1) of the Constitution applies, which amounts to misconduct, which could only be rectified by the impeachment of the president.

According to a former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice (retd) Wajhiuddin Ahmad, if the president was continuously violating the Constitution and if he could not be impeached for practical reasons, then the Supreme Court could take notice of the issue under Article 184(3) of the 1973 Constitution and could declare that the incumbent of the office of the president had forfeited the office. He said that the president not only cannot hold any office of director of a private company but also cannot hold the office like co-chairman of any political party. “The process of impeachment is well defined in the Constitution,” he said while adding: “Even if President Zardari surrenders the office of the director of a private company, even then the violation of the Constitution has happened.”

A former federal law minister of the Musharraf regime Khalid Ranjha was of the view that Asif Zardari was violating the Constitution and this could amount to his disqualification. He said that the president has to surrender one of his offices. Another former law minister of the Benazir Bhutto cabinet Syed Iqbal Haider was of the view that not only the president but even a provincial minister or a federal minister cannot hold any partnership or directorship of any private company. Therefore, he said, it is a clear violation of the 1973 Constitution. “The silence of Presidency and all of those associated with the Park Lane land scam, Pakistan State Oil scandal and Pakistan Steel Mills scandal is giving authenticity to the scandals,” said Syed Iqbal Haider, a former PPP leader from Sindh, adding that: “Otherwise it would amount to disqualification of the President.” Pakistani President in troubled waters.

Mr. Asif Zardari has lost all moral and legal authority to remain president of Pakistan. Even if he resigns as President of Park Lane and the PPPP, he has failed to live up his own promises of reversing the 17th amendment, canceling 58-2(b)and restoring the constitution to its 1973 origins. Facing immanent defeat in the next elections, if Mr. Zardari does not exit the presidency now, he will jeopardize his entire party.

A July Supreme Court ruling declared the NRO had to be passed by parliament and gave a three-month deadline.

Parliament was to start a debate on the bill this week. Its decision to abandon the bill came after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Monday declined to support the bill, saying it would legitimize corruption. The chief of the movement, which has a stronghold in the country’s financial capital, Karachi, advised Mr. Zardari to face the charges.

The government’s climb down averts a potential embarrassment. But it throws open the question of what happens if the bill isn’t passed. Legal experts say the most likely result would be that the ordinance lapses, potentially reopening the charges.
